Call it what you want, HOGWASH or whatever, but his pitching has
been good for four starts. His pitching was pathetic for at least four
starts. His stint in the bullpen was acceptable and that is where he
belongs. I'm not saying Dickson is a bad pitcher, I'm saying he can not
consistently be a good STARTING pitcher. He could probably make a career
with the occasional start and be pretty decent long reliever. Don't
count on him to pitch the big game, bail you out of the big jam or do
anything against other good teams. Give him a ten runs and he could give
you 6 or 7 innings(which Phil Nevin could probably do).
Remember back to Baltimore? Dickson pitched about 5 strong
innings giving up only 1 run then gave up three or four runs and couldn't
give through the 6th. The Angels won 8-7 when Garret Anderson robbed
Harold Baines of his second homer of the night. OR Detroit when he
pitched good through 5 again then gave up like 5 runs in the sixth. The
Angels won 8-6 when the surprising Hasegawa came in and put out the fire.
Sounds like a long reliever to me.
By the way Peter, the attitude that you have is the same that
Marcel and the coaching staff of the '95 team had that ran the team to
the ground. Marcel was like, well were in a tough stretch but Shawn
Boskie will ptch us out. Where is Boskie now? Obviously, he wasn't any
good and he pitched over his head......kind of like Dickson. We've got
to rely on the pitchers that are actually good like Olivares, Finley and
Washburn, not Dickson. The other thing is, Peter, let's learn from our
mistakes, not make them all over again.
I believe the ability for this mailing list to work is based on
mutual respect for other opinions. I try to have respect for other
people's opinions and evaluate their points. Saying my opinion is
HOGWASH is not exactly the most convincing point. Neither is a bunch of
stats. I know Finley has not given up 116 homers this year. If you
think Dickson is good give the readers a reason not an insult.
